Happy Tuesday! I hope you had a good time at Parish Day this past Sunday. The weather was beautiful, the band was awesome, and the food was delicious. Later that afternoon we took the leftover burgers and fixings to the Men’s Shelter on N Tryon street along with some board games to share food and fellowship with some of the men there.

Lastly, it’s that time of year when we say thank you to our wonderful volunteers who have been so dedicated to the youth throughout the year. If you know someone who has volunteered, say thanks! If you are a volunteer, THANK YOU! And if you’d like to volunteer, watch this video to find out more about what it’s like working with the children and youth of Christ Church. (You can watch it even if you don’t plan on volunteering.)

Would you like to be a similar mentor to our youth next year? Consider if working with
the youth could be a place where you might make a difference. We need 7th grade, 9th
grade, 11th and 12th grade Sunday School teachers, as well as Wednesday night middle
school youth group leaders for 6th-8th grade. Please prayerfully consider sharing
your time and talent with the Youth this upcoming school year! Please call Anne Ratcliffe at 704 714 6941 if you’d like to be involved or if you could recommend someone!

Pilgrimage Parent/Leader Meeting

Wednesday May 30th from 6:00-7:00 PM there will be a meeting for the parents of Pilgrims and the leaders in St Francis A. Please come ready to hear from the leaders of the Pilgrimage and to ask any questions you have.

Freedom Schools

Please bring at least one item and place it in the Freedom School bins on Sunday, May 20th or any other day in May. Your donations will ensure that these children have access to the resources that help make camp fun and educational. The camp will include 30 children from Rama Road Elementary School. We need: packs of juice boxes, packs of snack foods, packs of markers, construction paper, pencils, glue sticks, poster board, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, scissors, new or gently used swim suits. A complete list is on the website.

8th Grade Confirmation- June 3

The Bishop is coming! The Bishop is coming! Confirmation for the 8th graders is June 3rd in the Church with a light reception to follow in the Blue Room. Confirmands are expected to attend a rehearsal Saturday June 2 at 10:00 AM in the Church. Mentors are invited to the service but do NOT have to be at the rehearsal. Christ Church, First Presbyterian, and Myers Park Presbyterian are starting a new summer book club for rising 7th and 8th graders called Bound Together. We will meet once a month (May 20, June 17, July 15, and August 19th) to talk about a chosen book and reflect on how it has an impact on our faith and life in community. The next book is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Join us when you can or every time! We will meet from 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Julia’s Coffee House (1133 N. Wendover Road).

Readings for Pentecost

Acts 2:1-21
Psalm 104: 25-35,37
Romans 8:22-27
John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

“And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”

-Have you ever felt ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’?

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Well, that’s it! EYC, Life Groups, and Sunday School all concluded this week and we ended our program year with Youth Sunday and Senior Recognition. Thanks to Robby Lucas, Mary Carlisle Crehore, Ellison Sherrill, Court Haworth, Taylor Cullen, and Jackson Daisley for preaching terrific sermons at the three services. Thanks also to all the youth who were ushers, readers, prayers, acolytes, and chalice bearers. And CONGRATS to all the seniors, especially those who had prom at Myers Park the night before and still showed up! It was a wonderful day and a great way to celebrate the awesome youth of Christ Church. Check out the slide shows from  All Saints Hall and the sermons from the Church at the bottom of this post!

And remember, just because the program year has come to an end, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on here until the fall. Quite the contrary! Thanks for reading and see you this Sunday for Parish Day!

-Did you know you have eternal life?

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Happy Tuesday! There’s a big vote going on in NC today and regardless of how or for whom you’re voting, there is one question we should all consider before going to the polls…Why do we vote on a TUESDAY?! “In 1845, before Florida, California, and Texas were states or slavery had been abolished, Congress needed to pick a time for Americans to vote. We were an agrarian society. We traveled by horse and buggy. Farmers needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote, and a day to get back, without interfering with the three days of worship. So that left Tuesday and Wednesday, but Wednesday was market day. So, Tuesday it was. In 1875 Congress extended the Tuesday date for national House elections and in 1914 for federal Senate elections.” (From www.whytuesday.org) Now you know!

Anyway, Youth Sunday is THIS SUNDAY! Also, the last EYC and Life Groups are this Wednesday. I also want to give a shout out to any youth reading this who are in boarding school. Thanks for checking in and we look forward to welcoming you home real soon!

-Drew Courtright, Youth Minister

This summer Christ Church is partnering with Christ Lutheran to welcome over 80 campers (from Mclintock Middle School and Rama Road Elementary) to a Freedom School Camp. We have amazing opportunities for all ages to get involved. We are especially in need of people to help with afternoon activities for the children on a one-time basis for 2-3 hours. Activities include things such as cooking, a craft or leading a soccer clinic, etc. We also need people to help serve lunch and snacks (a great opportunity for families with younger children). To get involved in any of these areas please contact Fran Redic at mredic@carolina.rr.com or see the insert in this month’s “Disciple.”

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

-Is your joy complete in the love of Christ?

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Happy May! Thanks to all the youth and adults who made the 9th grade City Bus Trip a huge success this Sunday. We received this message from the advocate of one of the families. “[The mother] is deeply grateful for what you and your group did for her and her family. She wanted to say it again and again to the entire group that went to visit her, but because of the language barrier she couldn’t. Thank you so very much for doing this for them.  That is a true reflection what the love of God is all about.”

And that is why we do what we do. Here’s the news!

-How does Christ abide in you and you in Him?

Hello! We’re back after an Easter break. Everything is going well and we’re getting revved up for the end of the year festivities. Also, now that we are finished with the Gospel of Mark both in EYC and here with the Devotion, I think I’ll change it up. Now for the Devotion I will post the readings for the upcoming Sunday (we’re in Year B of the Lectionary), highlight a verse or two from one of them, add a question and the Collect as well. Enjoy!

Devotion

Mark 16: 14-18

Later he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting at the table; and he upbraided them for their lack of faith and stubbornness, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.’

How do you go out into the world and proclaim the good news?

8. For the Mission of the Church

Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you
through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him,
that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Happy Tuesday! I hope you had a nice Palm Sunday. Check out the picture below that I took in a church Bethany (just outside of Jerusalem). Notice the person taking off his/her cloak on the left whose face you can’t see. It that you, taking your cloak off for Jesus? Pretty cool huh? Next Sunday is Easter Sunday (woo hoo!) but let’s not forget about what happened between Palm and Easter Sunday, like on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I echo Chip’s encouragement to take part in the Holy Week services at Church this week. Fully investing in Holy Week helps you to more fully understand the meaning of Easter and of Resurrection on Sunday. I highly recommend it. Plus, there’s no Sunday School or youth group/life groups so you might as well!

Mark 16:1-8

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

-What would you say if you arrived and the tomb were empty?

55. For a Person in Trouble or Bereavement
O merciful Father, who hast taught us in thy holy Word that
thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men:
Look with pity upon the sorrows of thy servant for whom
our prayers are offered. Remember him, O Lord, in mercy,
nourish his soul with patience, comfort him with a sense of
thy goodness, lift up thy countenance upon him, and give
him peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Happy Tuesday! Thanks to everyone who helped make the Mama CC’s Spaghetti Dinner a great success. Even though UNC lost just moments before the auction started, spirits were high and so were some of the bids! Every penny raised goes straight to the Youth Department so thank you very much. Looking ahead, Christ Church is building its 25th Habitat for Humanity house, this one in memory of Aimee Norman, and the Youth Day for the build is April 21st where youth 16 and older are invited to come work on the house. Check out these videos to get excited about getting involved with Habitat, whatever your age! If you would like to come on April 21st, email Christine at deliac@christchurchcharlotte.org.

Mark 15: 33-39

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling for Elijah.’ And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’

What do you think about the centurion’s statement?

26. For those who suffer for the sake of Conscience
O God our Father, whose Son forgave his enemies while he
was suffering shame and death: Strengthen those who suffer
for the sake of conscience; when they are accused, save them
from speaking in hate; when they are rejected, save them
from bitterness; when they are imprisoned, save them from
despair; and to us your servants, give grace to respect their
witness and to discern the truth, that our society may be
cleansed and strengthened. This we ask for the sake of Jesus
Christ, our merciful and righteous Judge. Amen.

Wednesday Night

Middle School EYC Lenten Series

This Lent, middle school EYC will be doing a special Lenten series! We will be joining the Church in thinking about what it means to take a Leap of Faith by following the story of the Passion of Jesus in Mark, focussing on the five senses. Through smell, taste, sight, touch, and hearing we will take a look at Jesus’ own leap of faith. EYC will still be from 6:30 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday nights, with dinner available for $6. March 28th we will conclude our series with a family Eucharist service in All Saints Hall. The message and activity from the preceding weeks will be used in this service as we remember the whole Passion narrative and what we have done together throughout Lent. I also encourage you to engage your family to do the Leap of Faith Devotion book together.

Also for EYC– We will providing Easter eggs filled with candy for the children at the Elon Homes for Children. To do this, we are asking the youth to donate eggs and candy during Lent. Each week we will have a competition to see which grade can bring in the most eggs and candy and the winners each week will get an ice cream treat! So please bring some eggs and candy to make this Easter special for the children at Elon Homes.

Mark 15: 1-20

As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ He answered him, ‘You say so.’ Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, ‘Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.’ But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, ‘Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?’ For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again, ‘Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?’ They shouted back, ‘Crucify him!’ Pilate asked them, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’ But they shouted all the more, ‘Crucify him!’ So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. And they began saluting him, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

-Have false charges ever been brought against you?

-How did you handle them?

6. For our Enemies
O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love
our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth:
deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in
your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
